Obituary for Robert Wayne Werner

Robert “Bob” Wayne Werner of Howell, Michigan and formerly of Clawson died February 8, 2018 at St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was 67 years old. Robert was born September 4, 1950 in Newberry, Michigan to Elmer Albert Werner and Dona Mae (Maiden name: Smith).

Bob spent much of his childhood in Clawson, and would most fondly recall his childhood pals from Highland Ave, where they would ride bikes and play endless games of baseball.

At a young age, Bob and his brother Roger began shadowing their father to learn a variety of carpentry skills which he would later use to obtain his Michigan Builder’s license, build his family home on Lincoln, and share his trade with anyone who had an interest in learning.

Bob graduated from Clawson High School in 1968. Along with his love of sports, Bob had a passion for cars. He would often share about his various jobs that allowed him to work as a mechanic, which was more of a hobby than a job to him. He loved driving fast cars and motorcycles, although he kept that a secret from his mother. Bob even tried his hand in the racing industry as a drag racer.

He then became a father to his three daughters: Rebecca, Ericca, and Jesicca. He enjoyed taking them on trips and weekend adventures. He had a variety of impressions that would always make a child smile, but is most well known for inserting Goofy or Donald Duck voices into any conversation he had with kids. He also carried on his father’s tradition of sharing his carpentry skills. His children could often be seen on a job site with him, handing him tools or just watching him work.

Unless he was watching football, Bob was always on the go. He enjoyed traveling, bowling and playing softball. If there was something he wanted to do, he just went out and did it. From the Auto Show to the Detroit Grand Prix or the Thanksgiving Day Parade, he was always ready to show people a good time. He was an extremely generous man.

On April 20, 1985, he married Helen and his family grew by three. He enjoyed the addition of Brian, Tim, and Sandra to his family. Along with continued travels to the UP and other destinations, Bob and Helen bought their family cottage in West Branch which provided years of priceless memories to all who visited.

Bob was a hard working man; he truly was a jack of all trades. His proudest professional accomplishment was the 23 years he spent working at CertainTeed as a corporate trainer and the many patents he helped to develop. He had the gift of gab, a commanding presence when he walked in a room, and enjoyed teaching others about something he was passionate about. Often referred to as The Big Man, he was larger than life—not by his stature but by his spirit. Bob was more than a trainer or co-worker; he was a mentor and friend to all.

Bob was a family man. His biggest accomplishment in life was being given the title of Papa. He was the best! He loved his grandchildren with all of his heart. They brought so much joy and happiness to his life and he to theirs. Papa’s smile, silly voices, and dozens and dozens of cookies will be fondly remembered.

Bob leaves with his family an amazing legacy that he has passed on from his father. The gifts and talents he was blessed with will be passed down for generations and his memory will live on in the many lives that he has touched.

Robert is survived by his children Brian (Glynis) McBain, Tim (Kerry) McBain, Rebecca (Paul) Oles, Ericca Werner, Sandra (Greg) Rankel and Jesicca (Eric) Wittmann. 12 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. He is also survived by his sister Charlene (Carl) Yauk and brother Roger Werner. Two nieces and many loving extended family.

Robert is preceded in death by his wife Helen on December 31, 2014. Robert and Helen married April 20, 1985 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Clawson, Michigan.
