Obituary for Erma Nell Duty

Born March 8th, 1936 in Foster, West Virginia to loving parents, Leslie Virgil and Vernia Mae Harless, who preceded her in death.   She is also preceded in death by her loving husband Jack D. Duty, her brothers Harry, Harvey, and Homer Harless, and her sisters Lola Williams, Essie Dolin and Norma Ball.  

Erma is survived by her two devoted daughters, Mrs. Rodney (Blinda) Shaul of Canadian Lakes, MI and Mrs. David (Karen) King of Madison Heights, MI, grandchildren Mrs. Patrick (Susan) Motschenbacher of Seattle, WA, Mrs. Kurt (Christina) Laws of Lincoln, NE, Ryan (Kailey) Arbaugh of Royal Oak, MI, Joseph King (Samantha Wilson) of Sterling Heights, MI, Mrs. Marc (Angie) Hoffman of Fenton, MI, and Ryan Shaul (Jessica Bentley) of Los Gatos, CA, and great-grandchildren Ethan, Aiden and Ayla Laws of Lincoln, NE, Jaziah Wilson and Evelyn King of Sterling Heights, MI, Micah and Josiah Hoffman of Fenton, MI, and Ella Spivey and Rheann Bentley of Los Gatos, CA. She is also survived by her beloved sister Nina Dustin of Inman, SC.

God blessed Erma with many talents which she generously used to help others. She baked delicious pies to raise funds for the Associates of Michigan Christian College (Rochester College) and was crowned Associates Queen. She prepared monthly homemade meals for both the Golden Agers in Canton, OH, and Senior Citizens Day at Heritage Church of Christ in Clawson, MI. Erma was a skilled seamstress who made beautiful clothing for children in developing nations and for residents of a Montana reservation. She sewed lap blankets for chemotherapy and dialysis patients. She also volunteered at Timken Hospital in Canton, OH. As a minister’s wife, Erma faithfully served congregations in West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, and Florida.

In recent years, Erma was an avid quilter. It gave her great joy to piece gorgeous quilts for family members, friends, or even for acquaintances. One of her favorite pastimes was enjoying a meal with family. She also cherished the fellowship of the Ladies Bible Class at Bellows and Brown Church of Christ in Mt. Pleasant, MI.

Erma will be laid to rest with her husband , Jack D. Duty, in The Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road, Holly, MI 48442.
