Cullie O. Nall

November 09, 1927 - September 19, 2017

Online Obituaries for the Royal Oak, Clawson and Fenton, Michigan area.

Cullie O. Nall, 89, of Fenton and formerly of Clawson, passed away on September 19, 2017 in Fenton. She was born on November 9, 1927 in Alabama, to Ted and Irene (maiden name: Jones) Embrey. She spent her youth in Alabama and eventually moved to western Kentucky where she lived with her younger 3 sisters and brother. She later spoke of the one and only time she saw snow while living in Alabama as a childhood memory, without really knowing what the future held (Michigan!). She met her future husband, Thadeous (Gwyn) on a blind date in 1946 and it soon became obvious that she saw something special in this young man as her school teacher commented; “you must have a boyfriend because your grades are dropping.”

Cullie and Gwyn were engaged in 1947 after a 3 month courtship. Six months later the engaged couple moved to Michigan as Gwyn had found work in Detroit, with Cullie and Gwyn living with Gwyn’s older married brother… who kept a very close eye on the couple’s “behavior”. Always a good planner, she paid for her wedding dress with money she earned while picking cotton in Kentucky. The couple was married on November 27th, 1947 and enjoyed 61 years of marriage. Over the years, she worked at Federals, Sanders, and eventually Sears, where she stayed employed for about 19 years.

She loved to sew, knit, quilt, cross-stitch, embroidery and do needlepoint and give the artful creations as gifts and keepsakes. She worked as both girl scout and boy scout leaders, a room mother for the local school and as a very active member of the Royal Oak Church of Christ, where she loved to work with the lady’s group on various projects.

Cullie loved family time with her children and their families, and the time they spent together during holidays and vacations. The 4th of July was always special as “Grandma” always prepared special games and activities for the kids, as the rest of the family waited for Grandpa to finish his special holiday breakfast (served about noon J ).

Cullie loved music (and telling you when you hit the wrong note), playing cards, puzzles of all kinds and camping with Gwyn in their retirement years. As Gwyn’s health started to fail, she assumed the role of caregiver to the best of her ability and has missed her husband dearly since his passing in 2008.

She also belonged to the Brighton Church of Christ for a number of years, where she wrote cards to the sick and those with birthdays. Cullie is survived by her loving children, Elaine McElwaney and Edward (Devota) Nall; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Sue (Chuck) Farris and Linda (Randy) Vincent. She is preceded in death by her dear husband, Thadeous "T.G." Gwyn Nall (Nov. 6, 2008) and her parents.

The family wants to offer a special thanks to Mid-Michigan Hospice for all their care and support!
